Capdeville Jukebox

So here it is guys. Check out the video on the left. The 100 albums that we, collectively, have chosen to feature in Capdeville's jukebox. Well, James, Matt and I collectively chose, as Holly will clearly tell in the video and evidenced by our lack of Lady Gaga.

What’s in the Capdeville jukebox?

So here it is guys. The 100 albums that we, collectively, have chosen to feature in Capdeville’s jukebox. Well, James, Matt and I collectively chose, as Holly will clearly tell in the video and evidenced by our lack of Lady Gaga. The beauty of all three of us picking the albums is that we can each blame the real whiffs on the other two. The challenge is that we could not even get close to 100 albums unless we cut over half of the albums that we really wanted to put in the jukebox.

This is who we are. This process leaves us as vulnerable as you are when someone else scrolls through your iPod or iTunes list (you know, the old “Danielle put that Mariah Carey on my iPod” line we’ve all used to no avail).

A few of the parameters that we laid out when choosing this list:

  • Rock and roll is the theme, but more so as an attitude than as a genre.
  • Some artists just require greatest hits albums. There are too many good songs on too many albums for certain artists (Buddy Holly, Neil Diamond) when you have to limit your choices to 100. We wanted you to be able to hear the songs you liked by certain artists no matter what album they were on. That being said, some albums (“Some Girls” by the Stones, for example) stand on their own even though there is a Greatest Hits album by the same band already on the list.
  • While we want Capdeville to be authentic and reflective of music history, we also want it to be upbeat and fun at all times, hence no Velvet Underground or Bright Eyes.
  • We accidentally forgot the Smiths (thanks John Michael), Arcade Fire (again, thanks JM), Lil Wayne, and The “Animal House” soundtrack. We’re working to remedy that.
  • This list, like the bar itself, is intended to be something we create for your enjoyment, not ours. So this list is subject to change based on your suggestions. Join in our chat below and let us know what you want to hear. This jukebox will be ever-evolving.

***We’ll be sending out our reasoning and thoughts behind certain choices from Capdeville’s twitter account so please follow to learn the reason why there are or aren’t certain choices on the jukebox. If you are following me I will feature these ideas as well.

Let us know what you think!

Sorry Holly, I’m a chick and I’m in agreement with the boys. Lady Gaga is already everywhere, and as much as I can appreciate her pop/fashion enthusiasm and lord knows she’s catchy (I had Paparazzi stuck in my head for a MONTH after the VMA’s), if I hear any more from her I might claw my face off. Jukebox is lookin’ good.

    • Robert LeBlanc says:

Thanks so much for having our slack on that one! We have a bit of tightening up to do on this jukebox still, though, so please make some suggestions.

      I’m currently fighting off “Rah-Rah-ah-ah-ah, Roma, Roma-mah, GaGa ooh-la-la” and I’m losing terribly…

    • monicammiller says:

Alright so you want some good girl music, not sure if the this qualifies, however I am a girl! Good 80’s girl jam Pat Benatar, Love is a Battlefield,… Come on, you all know you love that song. Good 90’s Girl Jam The Cranberries, So many hits.

  2. nola74 says:

Pablo Honey? That album had non-believers thinking Radiohead was a one hit wonder type band. It’s their weakest album by far. OK Computer or The Bends should be what reps that great band. Both of those records are chock full of classics, but aren’t as snobby as more recent records have become.

Spoon’s Gimme Fiction is WAY better than Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

As for Better Than Ezra, I think their Greatest Hits record is in order rather than Paper Empire. How can any jukebox in New Orleans not have King of New Orleans in it?

    • Robert LeBlanc says:

Yeah, we got smoked pretty badly on that “Pablo Honey” call by a few other friends and the guys in MyNameIsJohnMichael. We’re going to switch that out to “The Bends” for sure. We just whiffed on that one.

We’ll probably roll with “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” for the next month or so despite the now glaringly obvious but completely unintentional association with the afore-mentioned Lady Gaga and then switch out to “Gimme Fiction.”

Yeah, on Better Than Ezra we thought the obvious choice was their Greatest Hits record but we know those guys and didn’t know how they would feel about that. We chose “Paper Empire” to help them to promote their latest album. We’ll get to the Greatest Hits album pretty soon, though.

    three eleven, three three eleven

    FULL SERVICE!

    • Robert LeBlanc says:

One of my best friends Dave McGuinness is a HUGE 311 fan. Without passing judgement on the band, its music, or its fans whatsoever, because of that, 311, unfortunately, will not make it into the jukebox. I just can’t bear the thought of having him come in and playing the record over and over as he did in college. If you had to deal with him in college as I did you would feel the same way.

      • Paul Capdeville says:

I don’t know Dave and can’t speak to his jukebox selection habits. However, I too have a friend that would come in here and play them on repeat over and over so we just can’t take the risk. Of course, this gentleman would have to travel from Hermosa Beach a lot in order to play our jukebox so maybe we can chance it.

      • thegoodrev13 says:

I used to bartend at a place that everyone called a 311 bar. The only reason is bc a few regulars used to wear out the 4 or 5 3121 CDs in the jukebox…it does happen.

    Aerosmith – Greatest Hits
    Tom Petty – Greatest Hits
    Beastie Boys
Just throwing out some band recommendations:
    The Black Crowes
    Bon Jovi
    The Cars
    Collective Soul
    Cowboy Mouth
    Cracker
    The Cure
    The Doors
    Jane’s Addiction
    Pink Floyd
    The Police

    • Robert LeBlanc says:

My thoughts next to each in parentheses but, in short, this makes me glad that we threw out the fact that this list was a work in progress. As you point out, we have some serious holes in the list as it is.

Aerosmith – Greatest Hits (We are idiots for including them on the first go-round)
Tom Petty – Greatest Hits (See above)
Beastie Boys (They made the final cut but we didn’t want anyone playing “Girls.” It would kill James I think. Literally)

Just throwing out some band recommendations:
The Black Crowes (Cool band but tough to get these guys in the top 100 on first pass)
Bon Jovi (Saw them at JazzFest. They played “Have a Nice Day” like 40 times and played most of their new stuff. They lost me forever.)
The Cars (Most underrated band of the 80s. These guys are so 80s they don’t even have a website, much less plans for crappy Reunion or Retirement Tours. They are on that list, but in the “T”s)
Collective Soul (This one will be tough to pull off. Kind of like Goo Goo Dolls or Gin Blossoms)
Cowboy Mouth (I’m ballsy, but not ballsy enough)
Cracker (Uncle Cracker ruined this band’s name. I’m working my way through that but its tough. Sort of like seeing Magda’s boobs in “There’s Something About Mary.” Just hard to get over)
The Cure (Great band, they are on the list under the “T”s like The Cars are)
The Doors (They’re good but I think the other bands from that era were much better)
Jane’s Addiction (This one was close to the first 100. Still working my way to this one)
Pink Floyd (Sort of slow and depressing in an upbeat bar setting. It’s the reason we didn’t put Velvet Underground on either)
The Police (These guys are in the “T”s on the top 100 as well. Have you ever seen the interview when Stewart Copeland tackled Sting?)

      • Paul Capdeville says:

And now my thoughts on Robert’s thoughts:

Aerosmith – I don’t know this girl. But I want to

Tom Petty – Gotta get him in there

Beastie Boys – This is the type of band that people love to say they listen to, but I bet nobody does. Also, “Girls” and “Brass Monkey” may be two of the worst songs ever released (and I’ve heard a lot of Abba music so I know bad songs when I hear them)

The Black Crowes – I’ll allow it

Bon Jovi – they peaked here: (also a sweet cameo by my contemporary Tommy Edison, only two years younger than me)

The Cars – these guys are awesome, we’ll go so far as to give you the dollar if you play The Cars

Collective Soul – Did Ro just say he kind of likes the Goo Goo Dolls and Gin Blossoms? No way to blame that on Danielle for being in your iPod when you put it out there like this.

Cowboy Mouth – Yall want em bad enough keep pressing us.

Cracker – meh, nothing special there. Personally thought that Dave Lowery’s first band, Camper Van Beethoven, was pretty cool.

The Cure – Free drinks will be given to anyone who can even partially replicate this

The Doors – Strange Days in the on the list. “Love Me Two Times” is a great song

Jane’s Addiction – when trying to listen to some of their music on iTunes today I found that they are a contributor this iMix: “Cougar Pop Volume 1″. We’ll pass

Pink Floyd – Yeah, too slow even though they’re pretty amazing. An all-time favorite

The Police – They’re awesome but I’m curious if the drummer just came from 5th period P.E. before the concert

  6. streetcar90 says:

I think you are forgetting a very influential band who Robert wrote about recently.
R.E.M. – Automatic For the People

  7. Robert LeBlanc says:

I think: “What in the hell were we thinking?” We are morons. I’m raking myself over the coals on this one. This is the worst omission possible. This is a top 10 or 20 album. We’ll rectify this immediately.

  8. michaeljkenny says:

Ok I realize space is limited but I have some siggestions of course:
    Stone Temple Pilots: Core
The Black Crowes: Shake Your Money Maker
The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde on Blonde
    The Clash: London Callin
    Marvin Gaye: What’s Going On
    Jimi Hendrix: Are you Experienced
Nirvana: Nevermind, Incesticide, or In Utero
Stevie Wonder: Innervisions or Best of
    Gun’s and Roses: Best of
Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin IV but no Stairway or just Led Zeppelin
    Billy Joel: The Stranger
    Prince: Purple Rain
    Who: Tommy
Pink Floyd: Any Album or best of
    Creedence Clearwater Revival: Green River
    Otis Redding: Otis Blue
    Fleetwood Mac: Rumors
    Portishead: Dummy
    Smokey Robinson: The Definitive Collection
Sinatra and Deano any (although I understand the trepidation as they are on every jukebox known to man)

Not sure how any collection would be without some of these but I like y’alls list for the most part (does Bloc really deserve two spots? Just sayin) and thanks for putting Talking Heads on there Jonesy. Nice pull

  9. 91 Squared says:

It appears that 311 is a no brainer. May I recommend Grassroots or the Blue album.

  10. thegoodrev13 says:

Nice work Mr. Kenny, I like the list of your suggestions!

  11. selenagrace says:

oooooh, I LOVEEEE that we have The Strokes “Is This It?” on there… PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEE add some Hole “Celebrity Skin” I don’t care how crazy Courtney Love is, that is a great album! And do we seriously have two Billy Idol albums on here and no George Michael?! Blasphemy! Kudos to two Stones albums, though. and may I point out NO Billy Joel and NO Elton John… What’s a bar with no “Tiny Dancer” or “Benny and the Jets” amongst drunken friends?

  12. myteefun says:

    What about:
    En Vogue: Funky Divas
    Eurythmics: Greatest Hits
Joan Jett: Album or Bad Reputation or I Love Rock & Roll
    INXS: Greatest Hits
    Lords of Acid: Greatest Tits
    Moby: Play
Venga Boys: We Like to Party

  13. c.owen says:

    -CCR
    -Soundgarden
-Lynyrd Skynyrd (overlooking the inevitable event in which “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama” are overplayed.)

The rest are personal favorites that are unlikely to make the cut, but I think are worth mentioning (don’t bash me too hard, Ro):

-Sublime (I know, I know….but I had to say it.)
    -Tool (Lateralus might fly???)
-RATM…Renegades has some good covers (Ghost of Tom Joad-Springsteen, Maggie’s Farm-Dylan) as well as some old school west coast…just a thought.

  14. dkreller says:

Cream or really anything Clapton (Must Add)
    BTE
    Blind Melon – Best of
    Billy Joel
    Candlebox – Best of
Clint Black – No Time to Kill
    Brooks and Dunn – Greatest
    Chevelle – Wonder What’s Next
    G. Love – Lemonade
Jimi Hendrix – Best of (Must Add)
Led Zeppelin I & II (Must Add)
